Frequently Asked Questions

How do I start fencing for the first time?

Children can learn to fence in our Sunday classes. The best time to start is at the start of a school term. See Classes for more information.

For teenagers and adults, come along to the club on Monday or Thursday night - usually someone is happy to teach you the basics. After that we advise that you take 3-4 private lessons with our coaches. If you want to continue, you can join the club and continue to learn in our training sessions on Monday nights.

How do I join the club?

Send us a message via our Contact form, then come along and give it a try for a couple of sessions. If you're keen to join after that, talk to one of the people in charge.

What equipment do I need?

When you first start, we can usually lend you all of the equipment you need. We normally advise people to buy their own glove and chest protector as soon as possible, and only buy the more expensive gear such as weapons, protective clothing and wires once they're confident they will continue with the sport.

Where can I buy equipment?

Within NZ, you can order equipment from Mainland Fencing. Our experienced fencers can also give you suggestions for their favourite overseas suppliers.

What club night should I attend?

As a club member you can attend either Monday, Thursday or both.

Mondays start with a group training session, while Thursdays are more focused on fencing. We usually have more foilists on Monday nights, whereas there are plenty of sabre fencers both nights!

What fencing competitions and events are there in Auckland/NZ?

Auckland has a busy schedule of tournaments and training camps throughout the year. Check out the Fencing North calendar for events for all age groups from under-10 to adult.

If you're getting serious about competing, the Fencing New Zealand calendar has regional, national and international-level events throughout the country. Traveling to a fencing competition or camp is a great experience - talk to some of our more experienced fencers to find out more.
